Remove your phone number

If you don't want calls or messages for your iPhone on your iPad, iPod touch, or Mac, you can remove your phone number. There are two ways to do this:

  • On your iPhone, go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive. Select your Apple ID at the bottom of the screen and tap Sign Out. Then go to Settings > FaceTime, select your Apple ID and tap Sign Out.
  • If the phone number that you want to remove belongs to an iPhone that you can't access, change your Apple ID password. This removes all phone numbers from your iPad, iPod touch, and Mac. Calls or messages for the removed numbers won't appear on those devices anymore.

Turn your phone number on or off for your Mac

After you set up your phone number, you can turn it on or off for Messages and FaceTime on your Mac.

  1. Open Messages or FaceTime. If asked, sign in with the Apple ID that you're using with Messages and FaceTime on your iPhone.
  2. For Messages, choose Messages > Preferences, then click iMessage. For FaceTime, choose FaceTime > Preferences, then click Settings.
  3. Turn your phone number on or off:
    • To turn on your phone number, select it and your Apple ID in the list. If you don't see your phone number, get help with your settings or contact Apple Support. If you see a number that isn't yours, change your Apple ID password.
    • To turn off your phone number, deselect it in the list.
  4. If you want recipients to see your phone number and not your Apple ID, select your phone number from the “Start new conversations from” or ”Start new calls from” pop-up menu.

After you set up your phone number, you can turn it on or off for Messages and FaceTime on your iPad or iPod touch.

  1. For Messages, go to Settings > Messages and make sure that iMessage is on. If asked, sign in with the Apple ID you're using with Messages and FaceTime on your iPhone. Then tap Send & Receive.
  2. For FaceTime, go to Settings > FaceTime. If asked, sign in with the Apple ID that you're using with Messages and FaceTime on your iPhone.
  3. Turn your phone number on or off:
    • To turn on your phone number, select it and your Apple ID in the “You can be reached” section. If you don't see your phone number, get help with your settings or contact Apple Support. If you see a number that isn't yours, change your Apple ID password.
    • To turn off your phone number, uncheck it.

If you can't see or select your number in Messages or FaceTime

  1. Make sure that you're using the latest software for your Mac or iOS device.
  2. Make sure that you correctly followed the iPhone steps to set up your phone number. You should be using the same Apple ID on all of your devices.
  3. In the “You can be reached” section of Messages and FaceTime settings, make sure that there are checkmarks beside your phone number and Apple ID:

If your phone number is unchecked and you can't select it, or you have some other issue, follow these steps:

  1. On your Mac:
    • In Messages, choose Messages > Preferences, then click iMessage. Click Sign Out.
    • In FaceTime, choose FaceTime > Preferences, then click Sign Out.
  2. On your iPhone, iPad, and iPod:
    • Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive. Tap your Apple ID, then tap Sign Out.
    • Go to Settings > FaceTime. Tap your Apple ID, then tap Sign Out.
  3. On your iPhone:
    • Go back to Settings > Messages and make sure that iMessage is turned on.
    • Tap Send & Receive, then choose “Use your Apple ID for iMessage” and sign in with your Apple ID.
  4. Using the same Apple ID, sign back in to Messages and FaceTime on your other devices.

If you still need help, change your Apple ID password and repeat the setup steps. If that doesn't work, contact Apple Support.

If you purchased your phone from Vodafone, it should be set up for SMS automatically when you insert your Vodafone SIM. If you’re using a phone you purchased elsewhere, the message centre number will need to be set correctly in your phone to use SMS.

Standard text message charges

You can find the costs for sending standard national and international text messages in your plan or prepaid recharge's Critical Information Summary. Standard text messages are free to receive.

Standard and special characters text message limits

A single text message has a limit of 160 standard characters.

If you go over this, most devices will break the message into segments with a maximum length of 153 standard characters. You’re then charged your text message rate for each segment sent.

Some character sets, such as non-English language keyboards as well as emojis and emoticons, don’t have a 70 character limit per text message and 67 characters per segment.

If your message contains special characters, such as emojis, your device may send it as a picture message rather than a text message. If this happens, you’ll be charged for sending an MMS.

International number format.

When sending an international text message, you’ll need to enter the number in the correct international format.

To enter a mobile number in international format, you’ll need to:

  1. Enter exit code ‘+’.
  2. Enter the country code. Check the text message connectivity list above for the list of country codes.
  3. Enter the mobile number without the ‘0’ at the start. For example, if you’re sending a text to the UK mobile number ‘07836 191 191’:
  4. Enter the exit code ‘+’.
  5. Enter the UK country code ‘44’.
  6. Enter the mobile number ‘7836 191 191’, dropping the ‘0’ at the start.

Therefore, to send the text message, you’ll dial the number as ‘+44 7836 191 191’..

For someone to send you a text message from overseas, they’ll need to enter your number in international format:

  1. Enter exit code ‘+’.
  2. Enter Australian country code ‘61’.
  3. Enter your mobile number without the ‘0’ at the start.

For example, if your number was ‘0426 320 000’, someone sending you an international text message would need to enter your number as ‘+61 426 320 000’.

How is text messaging charged on international roaming?

If you’re sending a standard SMS while international roaming, visit our plan roaming rates or prepaid roaming rates.

Do text messages expire?

Yes. Text messages that aren’t retrieved by the recipient will eventually expire and won't be delivered. This usually occurs when the recipient’s device is switched off or out of coverage for an extended period of time.

Text messages sent from your Vodafone phone will expire after 3 days.

Text messages sent to you from other Vodafone phones will expire after 3 days.

Text messages sent to you from other networks will generally expire after 7 days. This may vary between providers.

What happens if I accidentally change or delete the message centre number?

If you accidentally change or delete the message centre number, you'll no longer be able to send text messages.

How do I switch off SMS delivery notifications?

If your device supports SMS delivery notifications and they’re switched on, a report request is automatically sent at the same time you send an SMS. When the recipient’s phone gets your SMS, a report is sent back to your phone to confirm delivery.

iPhones don’t support SMS delivery notifications.
