In the following paragraphs I will provide with a brief review of Lit a Memoir by Mary karr. Lit depicts Mary’s life growing up to be a mother, wife and her issues with drug use. She struggles with drinking and it took a toll in her family and more specifically her marriage. The book was beautifully written and brings forward some of Mary’s poetic background in her style of writing. I will attempt to relate Mary’s struggles with alcohol abuse to the topics brought forward in class and through our readings. Specifically, Mary’s developments of alcohol abuse and its effect on her loved ones, and her eventual transformation through Alcoholics Anonymous and spirituality.

She made the goal to pray for 90 days. She was to give thanks to a higher power for keeping her sober every day. She started to get benefits from her prayers. Prayer is one of the most important elements she recognized was helping individual within the group. Mary was resistant to the suggestions and advice from individuals that were in the group. While Mary is resistant to work through the program, she manages to get support when she was ready. She started by admitting that she was powerless over alcohol and started to pray to a higher power to help her in staying sober everyday. This is part of the 12 steps of Alcoholics anonymous which were the meetings that she was attending (Miller, Forcehimes & Zweben, 2011). She ended up drinking again after a month of being sober. Mary used prayer as an outlet to let some of her frustration out. While this were positive changes and she was not drinking, she was still having relationship issues with her husband Warren. Now that she was sober she was getting more irritated by Warren. It came to a point were she developed depression and wanted attempted suicide for which she was hospitalized. She is also very involved in church with her son which was interesting to see the shift in perspective from the place she was. Now she uses religion as very technical aspect of her life that maintains her and gives an outlet to surrender and gain support. She is also part of a community that is supportive and conducive to a more positive life style which is why in my opinion she was able to pull herself out of her own destructive
